O-Ring Splicing

Custom O-Ring Splicing

O-ring splicing is used to create custom O-rings for a variety of reasons:

  • the required dimensions may be non-standard and may be difficult to find in standard O-ring inventories
  • the required size may be too large for a standard O-ring
  • low volumes may be produced more economically using splicing rather than molding for unique O-rings
  • when O-rings are needed quickly, splicing can eliminate the wait for standard lead times needed for molded O-rings

Web Seal can splice solid and hollow core extruded profiles, from a variety of elastomers in nearly any size.  Continuous length cord stock is cut to length and the two ends are bonded together. We can cold splice (using cyanoacrylate glues) or vulcanize spliced O-rings.

Vulcanization takes place in machined aluminum molds.  The mold is mounted on a horizontal surface, with a top and bottom platen to hold the cord in place.  A foot pedal is used to maintain pressure.

Web Seal works with you to fabricate the most effective O-ring splicing for your application.

If standard O-rings don’t meet your application requirements, if you’re working on a prototype, or only need a small quantity run, then spliced, vulcanized O-rings might be your answer. However, there are certain limitations to using vulcanized O-rings. We don’t recommend them for dynamic applications where moving parts directly contact O-rings. But for static applications, custom O-ring splicing might be your best solution.

Spliced O-rings are a viable solution when standard O-rings are not feasible. They are custom-made from extruded cord, and the cord ends are vulcanized to form the O-ring seal at the ID or OD size required. They are cost-effective and can be manufactured quickly without the tooling needed for molding.

Unlike standard O-rings, we can accommodate almost any shape needing a seal. For example, you may need to seal a lid on a rectangular container. With proper design, a custom, spliced, and vulcanized o-ring can fit a perimeter groove on many shapes to form an excellent seal.

We work with almost any industrial or commercial sector. So let’s get started on your unique sealing application. We're ready to partner with you whether we can provide custom O-ring splicing, standard O-rings, or custom-made gaskets!

On January 28, 1986, most Americans, other than some engineers and plumbers, didn't know anything about O-Rings. Since the tragic deaths of the space shuttle Challenger's crew on that fateful day, the words O-Ring and Challenger will be forever linked. This tragedy reminds us that we're not just selling o-rings, seals and gaskets. What we do every day at Web Seal Inc. has a meaningful impact on the lives and safety of our customers and their customers. [more]
